MIRRORS
2

I learn my shape from other eyes.
I chase the smile I recognize.
Each crowded room becomes a test.
Approval is my disguise.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Did you ever know me at all?
I ask the mirrors one by one.
Still every mirror hides the sun.
They dress my face in borrowed light
And call their blindness sight.
I place my worth in every score.
Each triumph tells me what I’m for.
Each rising number blurs my face.
Till I’m a stranger at my core.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Did you ever know me at all?
I ask the mirrors one by one.
Still every mirror hides the sun.
They dress my face in borrowed light
And call their blindness sight.
Mirrors reflect the face I show.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
Mirrors reflect the face I show.
Show
Truth shines beyond
the borrowed glow.
Truth shines beyond
Borrowed glow
I step outside their chosen frame.
Will they deny the self I claim?
Or cut me down
to force me in
Then swear
I’ve always been the same.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
You never knew me at all.
I leave the mirrors one by one.
No mirror ever held the sun.
They offer back a face I trust.
I watch it turn to dust.
I turn from what the glass calls true.
No borrowed gaze can claim my view.
The truest light has always shone
Beyond what glass can know.
The mask I wore was made
for them to see.
The mirror was never meant
to hold me
