WEIGHTS AND MEASURES
3

The doorway gathers morning light,
each edge defined, each angle right.
I learn its measure, depth and span,
as though to know it means I can
But never step through.
I take the measure of it all,
weigh the risk, the gain, the fall.
Count the moment as it passes
then look up and miss it all.
Then look up and miss it all.
The clock stays faithful day by day,
each photograph holds change at bay.
I save the frame and mark the date,
as though a life could learn to wait.
I lose who I knew.
I lose who I know.
I take the measure of it all,
weigh the risk, the gain, the fall.
Count the moment as it passes
then look up and miss it all.
Then look up and miss it all.
Two lines appear before the dawn,
she counts the ways it could go wrong.
She weighs the cost, the change, the care
what can she lose? What can she bear?
Empty weighs on you.
Empty weighs on you.
I’ve been living by
weights and measures.
How much life I have traded
for weights and measures.
I am emptied by
weights and measures.
Oh, the weight,
the weight
of all these measures.
of all these measures.
I measured what I longed to hold.
And trusted what the numbers told.
Named what I feared would disappear,
but knowing only brought me near.
I know the pattern holds, and so,
I don’t need all there is to know.
Rev’rence asks me to enter whole.
I walk through and let life unfold.
And find I’m held and I am home.
And I am home.
Yea-yeaah!
